Hercules is a story most of us know. Maybe due to the animated movie made by Disney or it might also be because you actually read the real myth. As I have noticed form many Greek myths, they many times talk about the life of a hero and use exaggerations for it to look impressive. It is all the same with the Perseus myths, Hercules or even with the Odyssey. They describe all of the accomplishments and adventures of the heroes and add those divine interventions from the gods and encounters with different kinds of beasts and monsters. I would say that they used these to make their adventures more wonderful and outstanding. It’s more spectacular to say the hero killed a two headed beast than that he killed a simple animal.
They would not be considered the same as they are without all of the exaggerations, everything they said about them being sons of gods. If they tell you a story about a simple man who traveled a lot and was maybe a hunter, or was very strong you get bored. What the Greeks did in all of their myths, to add more emotion and interest, they made the animals huge monsters and the travels as going all the way around the world doing marvelous things, and being sons of gods. This is the reason why their myths are very popular and now many years later we still know about them and everyone learns them as part of their education.
